Koning Bhumibol overleden: Thai komen rouwend op straat

Koning Bhumibol van Thailand is, na een lang ziekbed, overleden. Dat heeft het koninklijk paleis in Bangkok in een communiqué meegedeeld. De op 88-jarige leeftijd overleden Bhumibol was 's werelds langst regerende monarch: hij regeerde sinds 1946 - zeventig jaar - over een land dat momenteel in politieke moeilijkheden zit en waar zijn verscheiden de problematiek enkel maar vergroot: Bhumibol werd immers in het voormalige Siam zowat verafgood. Op straat verschijnen tal van rouwende Thai. Het paleis liet voorts weten dat de koning "vreedzaam is heengegaan in het Siriraj-ziekenhuis".
