Bijna 12 miljoen mensen, zowat een zesde van de bevolking van Thailand, heeft het afgelopen jaar het koninklijk paleis in Bangkok bezocht om een laatste groet te brengen aan de overleden koning Bhumibol Adulyadej. Bhumibol overleed op 13 oktober vorig jaar. Over enkele weken wordt hij gecremeerd; vandaag is de laatste dag dat hij begroet kan worden. Duizenden mensen grepen die kans en stonden vanmorgen aan te schuiven in de straten van het historische centrum van Bangkok. Velen hadden er zelfs de nacht doorgebracht. De rij was al snel meer dan twee kilometer lang.
